Tete City Donors: Bread for the World and World Vision Cost: $23,300 |
Tete was one of the provinces hardest hit by the civil war in Mozambique. During the war, thousands of refugees flooded from the countryside into Tete City. The conclusion of the war brought new challenges to Tete, however. One of the biggest challenges facing Tete, and indeed the whole country, was education. Not only did a generation of children miss vital years of education in the chaos of the war, but after the war’s conclusion, there were thousands soldiers who were suddenly decommissioned. Many of these soldiers had been removed from schools, and their only skills were martial ones.
In response to this need in Tete Province the IPM has built a technical school on the outskirts of the city. The school will provide young adults with practical skills in the areas of carpentry, bucket making, and basic metal working. As well as work areas, there is an office for the director, storage space for equipment, and bathroom facilities. The school is completed, and its opening is only being held up by difficulties in extending the electrical grid to the school location, government authorization, and a few finishing touches.
