About an hour’s drive outside the city of Nampula, near Murrupula, is the small community of Sawa-Sawa. Here the church is responding to the community’s need for a water supply to their market garden fields. The land around Sawa-Sawa is fertile, but it is difficult to transport water uphill from the rivers to the fields. Generally, women in the community must spend many backbreaking hours carrying water to the fields, or, as is more common, the fields are cultivated with less water intensive and equally less valuable crops.
As a solution the community suggested that a diesel powered water pump would improve the situation. The pump, through a series of adjustable PVC pipes, was intended to move water from the rivers to the fields. However, large fluctuations in the cost of diesel fuel and the collapse in prices for market garden crops has thrown a wrench into the planned fiscal return of the project. The Projects Department is currently reevaluating the situation in Sawa-Sawa, to see if a there is another, more cost efficient option.
