The Projects Department of the Presbyterian Church of Mozambique
About the Projects Department
The Projects Department was created in 1992. Since then, it has sought to channel assistance from concerned Christians and philanthropic organizations to those in need in Mozambique. The work of the Projects Department has responded to the needs of Mozambique. Originally it focussed on helping the people recover from the devastating civil war. The church helped secure peace by providing medical assistance to the decommissioned Renamo soldiers, organizing civil education seminars and rebuilding communities so refugees could resettle in their homes. By 1997 the focus of the department again changed to reflect Mozambique’s needs. As shown in Antiocha, Tchessa, Mabilibile and the Womens’ Initiative, the work being done now includes building infrastructure and helping to improve the lives of Mozambicans through education.
Not all the projects in this book have been completed with complete transparency or perfect results. In 1997 it became apparent that changes were needed in the Projects Department. Goals were set, including capacity building, and strategic planning was begun. With the help of CBE (Business and Education Consultants), stakeholders and members of the Presbyterian Church of Mozambique the Projects Department has defined its vision, articulated its mission statement, and created a SWOT, and strategic and operational plans for the next two years.
Included in the appendices of this book are copies of the SWOT, strategic and operational plans for the Projects Department. Using a combination of the good planning in the documents, hiring new staff and training existing workers the Projects Department hopes to become more responsive to the needs of target groups, as well as obtaining the transparency and procedures necessary for a successful organization.
There is much work that still needs to be done in Mozambique. Schools need to be built, wells dug, churches constructed, agricultural products started and education offered to any who wish it. The Projects Department of the Presbyterian Church of Mozambique, with its close connections to communities across the country, experience, and work on its own procedures, is in an excellent position to do that work. It is hoped that through these projects, the people of Mozambique will see the love of God as shown by the love of their fellow men, who are willing and ready to help them.
